The Branford Food Pantry would like to thank the entire Branford community for the strong support we received before Thanksgiving. Your donations and efforts made a significant difference for over 240 Branford families.
The primary needs of mankind are food and shelter; the Branford Food Pantry (BFP) addresses that first need—food. The mission of the BFP is to provide groceries for families in need.
Families are qualified for assistance by the Branford Counseling Center and they usually include the elderly, physically and mentally challenged, disabled, single parent families, those out of work and the working poor.
Last year help reached an average of 150 families per month and over 240 different families for the year. Families receive food weekly and special full turkey dinners for the Thanksgiving and Christmas/holy season holidays.
There has always been a struggle to obtain enough food but the need is particularly acute now because the national supply reaching food banks has been reduced and the economy has driven more families to our door. We rely of the Connecticut Food Bank to supply a significant portion of our food. Since 2005, the number of families served has grown while food from the Food Bank has decreased leading to an increasing gap for food that must be provided by the community via cash and food donations.
The BFP (formerly Branford Food Council) was started by Branford churches over 33 years ago and those churches play an important, but not exclusive, role in the current operation. The Food Pantry is a 100% volunteer effort and is an IRS tax exempt 501(c)3 corporation.
